Repair Procedures Belong at Every Step

Hero Background Image

Ask any collision repairer what has changed most over the past decade, and you’ll probably hear some version of the same answer: the cars got smarter, and the repairs got more complicated.

That is why repair procedures can’t be treated like something you look up once, print, and tuck away. They need to be available at every step of the repair—from the first estimate to the final customer conversation.

When your team can see the right procedure at the right moment, you reduce guessing. There is a stronger repair plan. Technicians get clearer direction. And there’s better documentation about why certain operations, parts, scans, calibrations, or inspections are needed. And you can give customers a better explanation than, “That’s what the estimate says.”

Start With The Estimate, But Don’t Stop There

A good repair starts before the vehicle hits production. Having repair procedures available while writing or reviewing the estimate helps the team catch required operations early instead of finding them halfway through the job.

This is especially useful when procedures are accessible through the tools your team already uses. For example, CCC’s Repair Methods can be accessed on a desktop, on the web, or even from a technician’s phone in the CCC ONE® Mobile App. That way, it’s easy to confirm requirements while reviewing damage, building a supplement, or answering a question from the floor.

The goal is not to turn every estimator into a walking repair manual. The goal is to make procedure checks a normal part of the workflow.

Bring The Procedure To The Bay

Even the best estimate can lose value if the information does not make it to the technician doing the work. Many decisions are made at the car. Is there a one-time-use part? Does the OEM call for a specific weld location, sectioning point, corrosion protection step, scan, or calibration? Does a panel replacement require removing another component first? These are not details you want to leave to memory.

Procedures need to be easy to pull up at the vehicle, in the stall, and during teardown—not just saved somewhere in the job file. Because when technicians can pull up repair methods in the bay, the procedure becomes part of the repair—not paperwork after the fact. This ensures a safe, complete repair for the customer.

Use Procedures To Explain The Repair

Repair procedures also help outside the production area. They can make customer conversations clearer and less stressful.

Most customers do not understand why a “small hit” can lead to a bigger repair plan. They see a bumper cover. You see sensors, brackets, calibrations, materials, safety systems, and manufacturer requirements. Showing or referencing the repair procedure helps connect the dots.

Instead of saying, “We have to do this,” your team can say, “Here’s what the manufacturer requires for this repair, and here’s why it affects safety, timing, and cost.” That kind of explanation builds trust. It also helps customers understand that the shop is not adding work for the sake of adding work. The shop is following the information needed to repair the vehicle properly.

Make It A Shop Habit

The shops that get the most value from repair procedures do not treat them as a last-minute check. They build them into the process.

  • Check procedures during estimating and repair planning.
  • Make sure technicians can access them at the vehicle.
  • Document the procedures used on the job.
  • Use procedure information to explain repairs to customers and insurers.
  • Review misses or supplements and ask, “Would earlier access to the procedure have changed this?”

That is the real impact. Repair procedures help shops move from “we’ve always done it this way” to “we know this is the right way for this vehicle.”

For a busy shop, that can mean fewer surprises, better documentation, stronger customer conversations, and more confidence across the team. See how CCC Repair Methods can help bring OEM repair procedures into more of your repair process.
