Reduce Supplements with Early Calibration Planning

Most shops do not need to be told that calibrations are becoming a bigger part of repair planning. The harder questions are how the required calibrations are identified and when are they identified in the process — and how much friction and inefficiency does it create when it shows up late in the process.

More than two thirds of estimates still don't include calibrations. And of those, less than half appear on the initial estimate. That means a large percentage of calibration work is being identified after the repair is already in production and repairs have started.

When that happens, processes start to break down and a supplement(s) is created. Although there are instances when identifying all the calibrations during repair planning is not possible, the less it happens once repairs begin, the better. Early identification of the required calibrations enables proper production planning and a more seamless communication plan and experience with the vehicle owner and insurance carrier. Plus, resources can be scheduled accordingly relieving cycle time pressure.

And customer-facing teams have better repair insight to give owners about their vehicle. That visibility will only become more important as ADAS-equipped vehicles keep showing up in the bay. More cameras, sensors, radar, and related systems mean more repair plans will need to account for diagnostic and calibration work before the vehicle is ready to return to the road.
